In which one set of plot threads converge and the fandom's other OTP lay eyes on each other for the first time.
As you'll have gathered by now, I've had the joy of watching this show largely unspoiled. However, there were a couple of things that it was impossible to avoid knowing in advance. One was that the Petrelli brothers were ... er, Italian. The other thing was that the half of the fandom that didn't ship Peter with his brother shipped him with his long-lost niece.
(Someone please tell me that the internet is also covered with Hiro/Ando. If it is not, I may lose all faith in humanity, or at least slashers.)
Let's just say that I can see how if you were the kind of person inclined to 'ship fifteen-year-old cheerleaders with men in their twenties, you would be all over this. They certainly have a connection. The first time Peter meets Claire, he saves her life and she saves his. I can't see a romantic relationship between the two of them being a good idea though (as opposed to a plausible one) even without the incest angle.
... and there's that out of the way. On to more important things!
Some of my favourite parts of this episode were Claire's interaction with her schoolmates, both friend and foe. Her storyline really is, in part, a tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Zach as Xander and Jackie as Cordelia. I admit I cheered when Claire punched her former BFF in the face, which makes Jackie's death in Claire's place even more shocking later. It would be interesting if they subverted the nerd-with-a-crush-on-popular-girl story by having Zach turn out to actually be gay, if only because there seem to be no non-straight characters in this show so far. (Well, as far as we know.)
The other great thing about this story is Mr. Bennett trying to save his little girl without telling anyone else what the hell is going on or why he needs to ground her. He may be evil, but he is a good daddy. Somehow I find it not reassuring at all that Sylar ends up in his hands at the conclusion of the episode.
The other significant first meeting of the episode is between Peter and Ando. Ando instantly identifies what the two of them have in common: "without him, I'm not really anything either." Oh, Ando. You are a hero just for waiting in that diner drinking a bottomless cup of coffee and waiting for your friend to come back.
Alas, the subplots kind of let this episode down. Jessica is about to shoot D.L., and I wish I cared more about anything in that part of the story. Mohinder is beaten repeatedly over his pretty head with visions for the second episode in a row.
You know another thing this show could do without? Cheesy Voiceover Guy. If you need to do a 'previously on Heroes' recap, network, could you please get Sendhil Ramamurthy to do the narration? It would make those bits feel like a more organic part of the show and also less stupid.

That's an infamous tale; the scriptwriters intended for him to be gay, then the actor's agent said he couldn't be because he was up auditioning for the Sarah Connor Chronicles. (That, according the the production staff, was the argument she gave.) So out went the lines indicating that Zach is, in fact, gay. It caused a minor stir on the net.
Hiro/Ando does exist, don't worry. Though the biggest 'ships after the two you named are Sylar/Mohinder (you'll find out why soon enough) and Claude/Peter. (Claude is a character you haven't met yet.)
I saw the Buffy homages with Claire's storyline, too.
And now you have my darling beloved Six Months Ago coming up! Yay!

Date: 2007-06-24 03:43 pm (UTC)Grrrrr. I don't know what's more annoying - the agent's reason or the fact that the people casting for Sarah Connor Chronicles might actually have cared about the actor playing a gay character on a different show. Kudos for the show for attempting to have a canonically gay character, though.
Hiro/Ando does exist, don't worry.
I would be very concerned if the fandom wasn't slashing the two guys who are constantly all over each other and not blood relations *g*. Especially since 'they're just Japanese!' is a less convincing excuse than 'they're just Italian!'

Date: 2007-06-24 05:15 pm (UTC)I hear there'll be a canon gay character in season 2. Somewhat typically for tv, though, she'll be female. Err, not that I mind, but you know they always go for the women first because that's easier for mainstream audiences (read: male viewers).

LOL. I'll mail you excerpts from the hilarious "Slash Manual" for Heroes re: Hiro and Ando; can't mail you a link to the manual itself, as that has spoilers for the entire season.

Date: 2007-06-22 05:46 pm (UTC)Hiro/Ando exists, but is nowhere near as common as it should be, even after the upswing the pairing had at the end of the season.

Date: 2007-06-23 04:36 pm (UTC)Peter is fandom's Little Black Dress. If it moves and breathes, he's probably been shipped with it. I kid you not. *g*
Part of the reason why Peter/Claire took off so quickly, IMO, is the undeniable chemistry between the two actors, which zings in a way almost none of the other het ships do. Alas.
Also: one of the things I like most about their scenes is that when Claire's going to run and get help, after being terrified and *almost killed*, she turns back and asks Peter his *name*. God, I love Claire.
The other significant first meeting of the episode is between Peter and Ando. Ando instantly identifies what the two of them have in common: "without him, I'm not really anything either."
They've done a great job of making Peter an *empath*, in that he seems to connect very well with most of the characters he runs into. There's his obvious connection to his brother, of course, but witness also:
- Bonding with Mohinder over daddy issues: "We're both just cheap knockoffs of our fathers."
- Insta-bonding with Claire in the hallway: "Hey, it gets better."
- As you mentioned, bonding with Ando.
- An unexpected alliance with Isaac where the painter overcomes his resentment and jealousy and the two of them just stand in wonder when Peter finishes Isaac's painting.
This is developed more as the season goes on, and its one of my favorite aspects of Peter's powers/personality.
