This time, the fic-bit is Sarah Jane Adventures flavoured! AU of Revenge of the Slitheen. (Maria is around somewhere, of course. Perhaps trying to drag her fox terrier daemon away from a lamp post, or doing something else that keeps her from supervising Luke for a moment.)
Starting at a new school, Clyde was expecting to have to explain Zohra all over again, to everybody he met. Sometimes, he thought that if one more kid said what a cute dog she was, he was going to scream. Didn't people watch David Attenborough any more?
What he didn't expect, though, was to run into someone who stared at her. That was when Clyde first wondered if the kid had been born on another planet - didn't he realise that paying that much attention to other people's daemons was rude? Even worse, as he walked up to Clyde, the dog as his side flickered and shifted to match Zohra's shape. Not even settled yet. Truly, deeply weird.
"Your daemon is a fennec fox! They live in the desert, and are the smallest canid in the world. Their big ears help them to hunt for prey and shed body heat," the boy said, without even telling Clyde his name.
"Well, yeah," Clyde said, taken aback. "I know that. She's my daemon." Zohra looked hard at the other boy's daemon as it turned into a sparrow and fluttered up onto his shoulder.
The boy smiled nervously. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I've just never seen one like that before."
"That's because I'm the coolest person in Ealing." Admiddently, Clyde hasn't been in Ealing long enough to check that this is true, but there can't be much competition. "How come you know so much about fennec foxes?" Clyde's never actually run into anyone with the same daemon as him, but maybe this boy has a much less weird cousin or uncle or chiropractor whose daemon he'd asked about.
"I've been doing a lot of research," the boy says. "I don't know what my daemon is going to be yet, so I'm trying to work it out." Right now, it's turned into a lizard.
Clyde feels sorry for this weird kid in spite of himself. "I'm Clyde Langer," he says. "You're new here as well?"
"Luke Smith," says the boy, holding out a hand for Clyde to shake.
Clyde's deamon form came to me in a flash of inspiration, but there are a few notable people in the Whoniverse I'm still just plain stuck on.
Steven Taylor: Almost all male companions have dog daemons. Because they're loyal, brave, honest and curious and, let's be frank, because there is not a huge variation in personality between them. (Obvious exceptions include Adric and Turlough.) So Ian's daemon might be a beagle while Rory's is an Irish setter, but they're both essentially doggy. And yet, I cannot hit upon the right daemon for Steven, despite him being pretty much the same as all the others. Maybe I have just not thought of the correct breed.
Sam Jones: I think it is because she has no discernible personality. It is hard to embody something that doesn't exist in animal form. (No, I don't like Sam very much, why do you ask?)
Martha Jones: On the other hand, I love Martha, and yet I am equally stumped by her. I have no idea where to even start. Suggestions from my friends included a spider, a St Bernard and a peregrine falcon.
Amy Pond: Amy's daemon is as striking and beautiful as she is herself, and so unusual people turn their heads to look at it. There is certainly not another one like it in Leadworth. I just do not know what it is.

Date: 2012-01-25 06:13 am (UTC)For Amy, what about one of the many kinds of Bird of Paradise? She'd probably have a male bird, so lots of exciting plumage! I can certainly see her with a bird daemon, at any rate.
ETA: Wow, Martha is tricky. I don't think she's got a dog daemon, though - she's not a team builder.

Date: 2012-01-25 08:20 am (UTC)I adore His Dark Materials fusion AUs -- it's fascinating to see what daemons characters from other universes are given. I remember ages ago reading a post where someone on my flist (I wish I could remember who) suggested that the TARDIS could be the Doctor's daemon, which is an idea I love: it's clearly intelligent in its own right but is entirely bound to the Doctor, and is vastly more complex than a regular human daemon. And you couldn't find a more perfect expression of the Doctor's soul than the TARDIS.

Date: 2012-01-25 06:18 pm (UTC)Re: Amy's daemon - she's got a dragon, or some other mythical, impossible animal. She's sick of people telling her that she can't have an unreal animal as her daemon. Growing up, her parents thought it was yet another reason why she needed to see a therapist, even if she kept biting them.

Date: 2012-08-11 09:28 am (UTC)I cannot help if it must be a dog though, I don't know many dogs and thus find myself going "Can he be a corgi?" simply because I like corgis!
Martha would be something very lively and intelligent and stubborn ... maybe some sort of bird? Something really clever and creative, a weaver bird or something like that? Hmmm, Requires more thought!
I have no idea about Amy either!
(sorry to just wander by, was just looking idly through dreamwidth for people who like Doctor Who, could not resist commenting on this post, I also love daemon AUs!)
